Safe Asleep

She curls herself on the couch
The TV glow and blankets out
She’s had some trouble resting lately

Dreams of things she can’t recall
It doesn’t make much sense at all
Tomorrow will be better maybe

Lie beside her as she takes the better part of me
Because I give her all I have to keep her safe when she’s asleep
Sometimes I don’t think she even knows when I can see
But i’d give her all I have to keep her safe when she’s asleep

Mornings come too early now
Everyday there’s more to do
She wonders when it all will go away

Still she makes it through somehow
And sets aside the things she doubts
Now and then she takes some time to pray

Lie beside her as she takes the better part of me
Because I give her all I have to keep her safe when she’s asleep
Sometimes I don’t think she even knows when I can see
But i’d give her all I have to keep her safe when she’s asleep

I don’t think she understands the way I feel about her
I don’t think she knows how much I couldn’t live without her
I don’t think there’s anything I wouldn’t give to keep
All these things away so she is safe when she’s asleep

Lie beside her as she takes the better part of me
Because I give her all I have to keep her safe when she’s asleep
Sometimes I don’t think she even knows when I can see
But i’d give her all I have to keep her safe when she’s asleep

  1. Gorgeous. Stunning imagery, and I love the passion. The repetition is perfect. These would make amazing song lyrics.

    • Thank you. These pictures are actually real images of people who inspired these writings that have been altered. I hope the reader can identify with the images in a personal way without connecting a particular face or idea with them. I add them as a personal emotional connection to the words themselves and as a way of crediting the love that makes these lines possible.

      • I imagined that. I love the deep emotion that connects you to your poetry and your images. I sense that you feel a great deal as you write your lines and use the pictures.

  2. i found this poem strangely inspiring and in context with the picture it conjured images in my mind i can’t explain. there is one who sleeps beside me and that one so calm and sweet asleep that i wish for sleep to be forever. this poem brought a smile into me, maybe because of joy or maybe because i relate so much to it. 🙂
great poem which would make different readers feel differently when they read but all will be inspired in someway. keep up writing.

    • Thank you very much! There is a sacredness to sleep which is very intimate to watch. It’s as if we see the soul of the person without the pretense of physical expressions. Sleep has always inspired me to write. Thank you for the kind words 🙂

    • Wow, thank you do much for taking the time to look back through my poems. It has been a rather horrible day, and somehow the fact you spent some time here reading my heart is encouraging to me. I appreciate it very much
