Heretic

Lash it on, lash them tight
Light the darkness tonight
With the kerosene of flesh
From the hands of heretics

Bring them out, bring them down
To the center of town
Tie them up without a sound
Burn the wicked to the ground

God, I feel the singe on my skin
And the ropes around my wrists
Where is the evidence for this?
There is no evidence for this

God, I feel them breathing down my neck
As they set us all on fire
Take my spirit if you must
But I will not be a liar

Oh, the truth shall set you free
Free in flames; free in flames
But they see no fault in me
Unashamed; I’m unashamed
Spread my ashes to the wind
Tell them I would not repent
I will suffer for the crowd
But I am not a heretic

How can everyone who knows me
Think that I would be so ugly?
How can even those who love me
Think that I am so unholy?
Will these ashes bring redemption
If the crimes are your invention?
Prove me guilty here, I dare you
There is nothing to confess to

God, I feel the smoke attack my lungs
And their words upon my back
Would you leave me so unarmed?
So unready for attack

God, I know you led me to this place
If you leave me for the flame
I will stand beside my choice
I will not repent for pain

The truth shall set you free
Free in flames; free in flames
But they see no fault in me
Unashamed; I’m unashamed
Spread my ashes to the wind
Tell them I would not repent
I will suffer for the crowd
But I am not a heretic

    • Really? That is good to hear. I’m glad my words could encourage you. I was planning to post 2 poems today, and this was not meant to be the encouraging one–the other poem was–so that gives me hope that the other one might work too 😉

    • Yes, that is somewhat my thought. Or perhaps she is a witch…should she be burned? The Salem trials always struck me as chilling. How you can take someone you know and love and turn on them for the sake of speculation or circumstantial evidence…in someone’s way of thinking, we probably all deserve to burn because one man’s faith is another man’s terror. Thanks for stopping by

  1. intense, intense is the only word. intensely emotional. feels like there is anger to vent, despair to spread and a salvation to redeem.
to u happen to listen to doom metal?

    • I’ve listened to a bit of doom metal. Swallow the Sun has been on my playlist lately, and I have some Paramaecium, Drottnar, Type O Negative, Morphia, and My Dying Bride. I am by no means an expert on the genre, but I really do try to delve into all musical realms. I am not a metal purist or a strictly metal sort of listener, but I do identify well with some of the lyrical content of the genre. I feel that, although you can explore any topic with any kind of music, metal typically explores topics that other genres ignore, which intrigues me. If you have some Doom Metal recommendations, please be my guest 🙂

      • i’m also not a purist, neither do i limit my music to metal.
my dying bride rates high in my opinion. also i would recommend katatonia (listen to “tonight’s music”) agalloch (kind of atmospheric but mind blowing, listen to “in the shadow of our pale companion” “fire above ice below”)
and from the subgenre of epic doom listen to “warning – footprints” << this one sure hits the point.

if those bands are to your taste i will recommend more later 🙂

      • I am going to find those tonight and listen. Thank you! I am always interested in new music, and somehow I listen more closely when I know someone has recommended it. I will let you know!
